I put some pictures of rendered units at this imageshack link:

These are not my final units but I just want to know whether or not they are good enough.
Please leave comments, tips, or suggestions.

they all look real nice. but may i sugest for gold and such. make the material in 3d max. and add gloss to it so it shines different ways in all cameras and shines according to the lights

Is the lighting wrong in any way? It looks like the body of the unit is too dark.

I love them, especially the calvary! You should also take into consideration the shadow, it should sit directly below the unit, it's also good to render you image frames 4 to 5 times the size it needs to be, then just reduce the size with the MegaPack tool when you are packing them to .GP format.

I had this exact problem with a building when I first started modding the game, once you increase the size of the render and use MegaPack tool to decrease the size when packing the GP file it works fine. The problem is that any rough edges carry over the green transparent colour, anti-aliasing can somewhat solve this problem with the edge appearing smooter.

Would it be ok if I rendered the units 2x larger and then used anti-aliasing?

Anti aliasing is not recommended for certain animations such as death or walking, have a read here for more info on packing the animation frames http://swordandarrow.ucoz.com/index/megapack/0-17
