What is the limit of the number of weapon types that a unit can have?

As far as I know it is 3, whether or not you can specify more I'm not sure, but 3 weapons seems more than sufficient if you ask me.
What extra weapons were you thinking of?

I was thinking that, in a WW2 mod, you might be able to give an infantryman several copies of the same weapon but with different ranges. Then, similar to when cavalry charge after firing their guns, they move forward automatically and look like they are still using the same weapon. This might also be able to include grenades.

This is certaibly possible, have a look in the WEAPON.NDS & WEAPON.ADS file these 2 files control all the weapons available, you can add and edit weapons from there, it's always good to tweak around with the function & parameter files to find out what can be achieved.

How come you want to have the same weapon have different range values?

I want to make it so that infantry units advance automatically while firing and throwing grenades. For example, lets say an infantryman has 4 waepons, one long range SMG, one grenade, one short range SMG, and melee. When the unit advances, it fires the first SMG, then it advances and throws a grenade, and so forth.
