My next Archer unit I wan't to have the animation of the Archer place the arrows into the ground and grab arrows from this pile when the unit reloads, rather than grabbing an arrow from the units quiver, was this common practice in Medieval times? I have seen a reference to this somewhere but can't remember now.

yes that certainly was common practice with longbowmen, due to the sheer size of their bows ( over six foot without the string) and the arrows (sometimes larger than 3 foot) it made it difficult to reach around and pull an arrow out of the quiver. this hampered the firing rate.

This wasnt the case with crossbowmen though so keep the quiver animation! I would suggest though that they carried their quivers on their hips as opposed to on their backs. They also reloaded by using various methods, in the animation however It would look like them bending over. Ill explain via a picture its much easier!

Yeh that's what my crossbowman will feature, that's the belt and pulley with the belt claw, in the animation he will put one foot in the crossbow "hoop" as he bends over to load and draw it he holds his foot down, it will be a good animation.

That is correct about archers (and crossbowmen) not wearing the quiver on the back, it was worn on there hip exactly like my Longbowman, I am going to do a second animation where the Longbowman has the arrows in the ground and grabs them from there to reload, its an easy animation.

I'm reading an excellent book at the moment called "The Crossbow" by "Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey, it's an excellent read.

Not if you use the different animation modes that American Conquest uses, for example the Spanish Musketeer which uses the tripod to fire on, this unit sticks the tripod into the ground when setting up to attack (setting up/prepare to fire animations) and then when the unit moves he pulls it out the ground again (the frames are in reverse order for this) the unit is just using the "#" animations e.g. "#ATTACK2" with the frame count, so all we would be doing is substituting the tripod for a bunch of arrows, so it would work perfectly fine, and to be honest I think it would look amazingly realistic I have included the .GP so you can view the musketeer animation.

It's easy Michael! I was going to make a Musketeer for your mod until you scrapped it don't you remember, the unit was going to have the tripod.

See the GP and you will see what I am rambling on about! tongue

BTW are you still keen on making a unit or two for the SAM mod? I would really, really love an infantry unit from you, I love that death animation of your Pikeman! Looks like a horrific death! Just needs a pool of blood! You already have the animations done, are you keen on changing the costume to a medieval type unit and rendering?
The death animation I am talking about I uploaded the GP in the attachment.

Yeh [Hawk]Michael's mod, I was looking forward to it, shame it didn't generate enough interest, I thought it was very worthy.

Yeh, all mods start off with a small following, it's in its very early days, once I get some more units into the game I will be making a video and putting it on YouTube, that should get a fair few interested, the mod is also listed on ModDB (http://www.moddb.com/mods/sword-arrow-european-wars), it hasn't been on there long and has already generated a bit of interest and I haven't really put much info on there, once I add more units and a video more people will be aware of it.

Once we get a couple of playable factions as a demo I am sure it will generate a lot of interest, I know from experience unless there is something for users to interact with (e.g. a demo) then most people will have a quick glance and not bother as more often than not most mods never get finished, I am very keen to finish this one biggrin
