Is it possible for a unit to have 2 main firing weapons? For example, an assault unit in a WW1 mod has long range fire but throws grenades at closer range. Also, tanks fire their cannon at long range and machine guns at close range.

Yeh this ones easy. You just add another Weaponkind e.g.:

Code
WEAPONKIND 1 VISTREL
WEAPONKIND 2 IADROMOR
WEAPONKIND 0 PIKA


That's from the Grenadier unit from Cossacks (the same applies to American Conquest). So basically this unit has 3 weapons it can use, Weapon 1 is musket shot, Weapon 2 is grenades and Weapon 3 is the bayonet attack.
So you could even have the 3 attacks for your WW1 infantry unit as they all were bayonet equiped.
Then you also just chose the range you wan't the greandes to be thrown, accuracy etc. You just make a small animation of the grenade as it flies through the air, hits the gound, have a small delay and explodes, this is easy to do, you then just edit the WEAPON.NDS file.

For the tanks it's the same as above, you just have 2 "WEAPONKIND" functions in the .MD file, it would be no different to how the Cannon works in American Conquest, you have the first weapon which fires the cannonball at a distance, and for close quarter/range attack you have the second weapon which is the grape shot, all you do for you tank is subsitute the cannonball for the tanks shell, and the grape shot becomes the machine gun for the tank.

I don't really understand. Grapeshot is single-shot, but machine guns fire many shots and target enemy troops. Are you saying it is impossible?

I'm explaining to you that it is more than possible, it can be done easily
The grapeshot is an example of the Cannon having two different firing options.
You can add any type of firing option you like. You can make the machine guns even have magazines, so that the unit can fire 10, 20 or 30 rounds continuously, but then has to reload after that amount, so he stops shooting and you can specify how long he takes to reload. This is done by adding a "ZALP" function to the units .MD file.
Try it your self, open up a units .MD file and add ZALP 5 to one of the lines, pack the .MD with the GSC File Utility and copy and paste the generated file in your American Conquest folder, start the game and select the modified unit, you will notice that it can shoot 5 consecutive times before having to reload.
