In this post, I am mainly referring to the prepared historical battles that Hawks play. Is it possible to physically restrict a player from reusing troops that have routed (and regrouped at a general)?

You can change the time in which units rout for, this means for that set time they will not be able to be selected for that set time, I'm guessing the easy way around this is just set the time much higher, that way they rout for a long time and the units would be useless to the player.

That is a good idea but it actually goes against another idea that I have! biggrin The idea is to make units only rout for 1-4 seconds so that they start going back to their generals very quickly. Prolonged routing makes units look more like they have lost their minds rather than lost their courage. I want to restrict routed units because in most battles, people fight almost to the death, which is very unrealistic for all time periods, especially 1700-1900. This way, each player has to try to kill or rout the enemy army instead of just trying to kill more troops than the enemy.

Not necessarily, it has been noted in a number of battles when fear set in, many on both foot and horseback would literally flee the battlefield, it wasn't a case of them just walking some 200 metres away, they would flee kilometres and would often be pursued by the enemy. In one battle (I can't remember which one) many men fled all the way to the river (several kilometres away) and some even leapt in the water in armour to get to the barges and drowned such was the panic, that's what panic can do to you in the heat of battle, if no one knows what's going on and sees other men fleeing they will do the same, that's why it was so important to have disciplined soldiers, imagine your in battle sword in hand dead bodies everywhere and you see in the corner of you eyes a number of men flee and the enemy breaking through he lines, no doubt you would panic and start to flee, especially if you are not battle hardened, it's like a domino effect It would be a horrible place to be in, especially if you are not of Noble blood, your not going to receive a ransom, so its either off with your head or sold into slavery, and it has been well noted especially during medieval times most men would rather be put to death than go into slavery because it was considered worse than death.

What I mean is, routing troops run in all directions, even towards the enemy. They sometimes mass together in swarms and it is really strange. Iit would look more realisitc if they withdrew more quickly.

Ahh, now I see what you mean, you wan't a rout point, like a rally point?

No, we already have specific rally points in HEW and HDN. I just want to make the length of routing almost instantaneous so that units withdraw away from fightin almost right away. Instead of swarming units, the units will actually moce away towards a general or something when they get scared.

Since the source code is released, I think we should make some system to limit the re use of routed units. Nothing ismore unrealistic than players using routed troops over and over again until they fight to the last man almost. For example, on the second day of gettysburg, Lee attacked with all of Longstreet's brigades exxept Pickett's. Therefore, the next day, he only used Pickett's brigade and not the other brigades under Longstreet bexause they were spent from fighting. However, players can just use them again and again until the army ceases to exist. I have an odea for a good system. You can make troops rout to a certain area or HQ, and all the while, they are un selectable. Players then have to spend both time and resources(spirit?) to get certain amounts of troop out fighting again.

Also, since we can change the engine, we might be able to make it so that troops have increasinglu lower attack and defense stats and morale every time they rout.
